Racing for a Cure

" I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith!" 1 Timothy 4:7

What a busy weekend! I'm still recovering! Early Saturday morning, Hubby and I participated in our local Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5k. I ran with his company to help raise money to fight this disease. They hand out pink sheets that you can write the names of survivors or those who are resting in the arms of God after their long hard fight. I started my list, and the names kept coming! It is amazing to see how this cancer touches the hearts and lives of so many people.
One of the most powerful parts of this race was the Survivor March. Last year, we got to the race so late--due to lack of parking!--that I missed this. Y'all, they had the women in groups with signs designating those who had been cancer free for a year, 1-4 years, 5-9 years, etc. It touched my heart so that I just cried! Then, I recognized a precious lady from my church in the march! I had no idea that she'd had breast cancer. Talking to her Sunday, she said that she's been cancer free for 6 years. Wow! The picture at the top of the post shows a darlin' lady with her flowers that she received at the Survivor Breakfast. I love the scripture under the picture. Think about this. She has fought the battle of cancer. She finished the race of the chemo and radiation--the loss of hair, weight loss, and nausea. She kept the faith throughout, and she persevered. She beat the disease!
The middle one is yours truly and Hubby! And the last one makes me laugh! A Book Club decided to take it a step further. They adorned themselves in pink sequined dresses, red wigs, tiaras and hot pink boots and were asking people what you could do to detect breast cancer early on--self examination and a mammogram. I got a cool prize for being smart!! Ladies, if you have NEVER had a mammogram talk to your doctor and schedule one. They are not bad at all!! I promise! And it could save your life! Do it for your family! Do it for Runner Mom ! Do it for YOU!
The race was a great one. The competitive runners were first--yes, me!, then the fun runners, walkers, and dogs!! The dogs wore cute pink bandannas! Hubby and I finished and needed to get back home to start on the next leg of our long weekend adventure, so we left before awards. I checked last night to see where I came in. In my age group, I came in 4th. Not bad...then I looked at the lady who came in 2nd. It was not a lady, but a business man that we know!!! Somehow, they put him in the women's group--I'm sure he was NOT happy about that! Hmmm...if you move him to the men's division where he belonged, then the lady in third would have placed 2nd, and I would have come in 3rd. Not bad for a tough and hilly 5k! Oh well, I'm sure this guy looked cute wearing my hot pink medal!!
If you have the opportunity to participate in a Race for the Cure, PLEASE do! It is an amazing race to be a part of--whether you run, walk, or volunteer. Get involved!!
Sweet Blessings!

Susan,
The Race for the Cure is such an awesome event. Great pictures...and there's you in a feather boa again!

Some of my friends are doing the 3-day breast cancer walk in a couple of weeks. They're walking for our friend who has breast cancer (who unfortunately doesn't look like she'll win that fight). The sooner the doctors can find a cure the better! Who among us hasn't been touched personally by breast cancer(whether ourselves or someone close).

Hugs,
Kelli

Thanks to you and your husband for running in this very important race, Susan. I have two women in my circle of friends fighting breast cancer now. Isn't it so amazing to see Jesus at work even in times of great suffering? Bless you for being our Father's feet AND heart to so many!

Hugs and love,

Mary

Susan,

Thanks for your comments on my lastest blog post, and your prayers. They are treasured by me!

Perhaps you will get to see my flowers in person one day if you are running in Raleigh. I'd love to entertain you!

Love,

Mary

You and hubs are darling! And the pink ladies are just too much.

Such a worthy cause, Susan. Thanks for running in the right direction. And yes, I've had my mammogram recently.

I too have my mammograms...don't look forward to them, but they are pretty easy.

Praying for you today,

Hooray for you. I hope with the practice I am doing I might be ready to run a 5k this time next year, or sooner. I had a little scare a few years back, and I don't miss a mammogram now. Thanks for the reminder of how important it is. How's subbing? I started back today as soon as I returned from FL and will be subbing tomorrow too. Have a great weekend! Jackie

I know I'm late commenting -- I'm just now catching up on some blogs - but I also can now say I have had a mammogram! I turned 40 last month and celebrated by getting my inaugural mammo! Of course, they had to call me back for follow-up since they had never seen my "young tissue" before (I have to throw out that it's young!! :-) but all is clear and it was no big deal! I'm sidelined from running right now -- curious what you're doing with your plantar fasciitis. Are you going to run through it? Having lots of trouble, but would love to do a race for the cure!
