It's a bit drizzly here, and that is really keeping me from wanting to get in my run today! I don't do cold AND rain together! Blah! So, I decided to catch you all up to date on the wreath that I started last week. If you want to see sweet Tara's post about her wreath--which is where my inspiration came from, please go HERE!! And, if you want to create one yourself, she has the beginning steps in pictures because I completely forgot to take any while I was making the yarn puffs/puffballs!

Tara mentioned that this retails for $298.00 at Anthropologie. I now know why!!! It's not hard, just time consuming. A lot of time....just sayin'!! But, between photo shoots and edits and laundry and running, it is finally done. Wanted to share a few pics of mine and the process of putting it together.

Lots of yarn puffs and the empty wreath....please leave the plastic on the wreath! It keeps it from shedding everywhere.

I was known as the glue gun queen when I taught school--how else do you think we were able to attach the children's artwork to the cement walls? This is my original glue gun -- circa 1985. It still is fabulous!!

Ok, glue and fluff all the way around the top of the wreath.

Now, glue and fluff around the outer rim of the wreath...you get the picture!!

Do the same with the inner part of the wreath. And, yes, I was one yarn puff too short!!! Have mercy!! I thought I had made enough of those little things! It took me 4 skeins of yarn plus a little bit more from a 5th one to make all of these puffs. I purchased my yarn at AC Moore. The large wreath came from Hobby Lobby for less than $5.00.

Here you go!! Ta-da!! Even Scarlette likes it. It look lovely amongst the pumpkins and turkeys and all!

Not sure if I will hang it there when I get ready to start decorating after Thanksgiving or not. Will keep you posted.

All in all, it was fun to make and not difficult. Will you see me selling these in craft shows? No way!!! This one is enough. What holiday crafts are you in the middle of or are thinking about doing this season? I would love to know.

Sweet blessings,
It's Friday!! Whoohoo!! Do y'all have big plans this weekend or are you just hanging out at home and chillin' out? We are headed up to NC in the morning for a half marathon--which I have not trained for! I am not practicing what I preach with being prepared. So, I will be treating this race as just a fun long run with a few hundred new friends.

Earlier this week, I posted a book give away here. And today, I want to announce the winner....and it is {drum roll please!!}....Tilara Monroe. Yay! I will be contacting you to get your address and zip that fabulous book that will soooo touch your heart early next week. Congratulations!

A while back, I discovered two bloggers that I am following regularly. And, I found them through a dear friend of mine, Paige. I invite you to read her posts here. She is just an amazing girl. Period. One of the cool things about blogging is the new and creative ideas that others share. Being somewhat of a craft person---yes, I would much rather be creating with fabric and paint and glue guns than creating a marvelous supper for the family. I am more than happy to help clean up the marvelous supper afterwards, but would love a personal chef that loves to cook. I digress....

So, as I was saying, these two bloggers that I am following are really amazing. Tara, writes at Between You and Me. Y'all, she has created this darlin' wreath that you can buy for hundreds elsewhere! And, like her, I can't pay hundreds for a wreath either. My husband would think I had lost my mind!! So....we create and craft! As I told her, it will take me weeks to get started on this project. But....I DO have my supplies ready. See....
So if you hop over to her link, you can see the step-by-step of making this adorable piece for your home....at a fraction of what you would pay if you ordered it.

Another sweet gal and artist is Sasha, at Lemonade Makin' Mama. Sasha has some lovely prints that I thought would go nicely in our home. So, I ordered a couple. I got this one in yesterday, and have just fallen in love with it.

Finally, I wanted to share with you my fall sideboard. I still have a few more things that I would like to do to it....hoping it will be finished this weekend.
Love this glass jar (Hobby Lobby). I purchased the burlap ribbon and rosette ( half price, thank you very much!) from HL as well. Found a few crepe/crape (not sure how Southern Living spells this!) myrtle branches in the back yard and voila! Easy and natural for the entrance to our home. Would love to hear what your fall favorites are shaping up to be.
Don't know about you all, but I am loving this gorgeous fall weather. Have been seeing lots of beautiful colors around here. Actually headed to NC this weekend for a race, and the opportunity to spend some time (briefly!) in the mountains--like driving there, running there, and driving back. Wanted to share a small pic of my "fall" in the dough bowl that sits on the kitchen island. My beautiful big white pumpkin that graced the center had to be tossed into the garbage--he was starting to rot! Blah!

Two weeks ago, I attended the Allume Blogger's conference here in Greenville. If you didn't get to read about it, you can go here and check out my perspective. Ya'll, it truly was amazing! One of the speakers was Laura Parker with Exodus Road. I had heard bits and pieces of her story, and I wanted to sit in on her session to hear more about it.

Laura, her husband Matt, and their kids were led to Southeast Asia for humanitarian work a few years ago. It wasn't your typical mission trip as we Americans have come to know such as to rebuild homes, dig wells for fresh water, or have a vacation Bible school. Let me share with you just a little bit of what Laura's book says: "Laura Parker didn't expect to enter the undercover world of sex trafficking. Through a series of events, the couple quickly became immersed in a world of body worn cameras, changing aliases, and mafia driven red-light districts." Y'all, this sweet girl is for real! She and Matt are your very ordinary down the street couple! Period. God uses each of us in different ways to accomplish His purpose during various seasons of our lives.

Think about it this way. Imagine that you are standing in Laura's shoes. And, that your sweet hubby is wearing Matt's shoes as well. Now, imagine that you both know God has called you to help rescue precious little girls--think middle school age-- who have been taken against their will to work in a place that you cannot even imagine. I know that I can't. Your hubby goes out several nights a week and is up until dawn while you are at home trying to act like all is normal with your children. Can you sleep while he is away? Can you handle the "wait" to see how many girls were rescued or worse case scenario, your husband winds up getting caught? This is the life that the Parkers lived for months on end. Their courage and trust in God is amazing!

Here is an excerpt from the book:

Tonight Matt was going out again.

This time, alone.

The idea was to ask a tuk-tuk (motorcycle taxi) driver for young girls and see where he led. The plan made both of us nervous and would have been far better if it involved backup—a partner to go with Matt or to at least track him remotely.

But we’d already asked everyone we knew and had found no takers.

“You shouldn’t be doing this by yourself,” we’d heard from friends, missionaries, humanitarian workers.

“Then come with me,” Matt had said to each.

“No, no I couldn’t do that,” was the usual reply.

And we got it, we did. There are a million reasons why upstanding moral men don’t belong in strip clubs. A million. There are marriages, triggers and dangers. There are reputations to protect and pitfalls to avoid. There are entire organizations whose work might crumble if they sanctioned undercover work in brothels.

Yet, yet.

We still couldn’t get away from this idea that if it were our daughter, we’d want someone to go looking for her, want someone, somewhere, to fight for her rescue—regardless of the red tape or danger.

We couldn’t get past the idea that maybe there was a noble reason for a good man to frequent a brothel, after all.

“No one ever overcomes difficulties by going at them in a hesitant, doubtful way.” – Laura Ingalls Wilder

Laura Ingalls Wilder, my Little House on the Prairie gal, spoke such wisdom so long ago.

“God is in the slums, in the cardboard boxes where the poor play house. God is in the silence of a mother who has infected her child with a virus that will end both their lives. God is in the cries heard under the rubble of war. God is in the debris of wasted opportunity and lives, and God is with us if we are with them.” – Bono, U2

Trying to get a grasp to share with you all has been harder than I thought it would be. So, I am going to share just bits and pieces and tie it all up with a lovely ribbon---it truly was a gift that I was not expecting. I believe that's also called grace.

When I first heard about Allume in the spring and saw that it was going to be in my hometown, I thought, "This might actually work!" Child #2 would be running cross country, but he told me that he was fine with my missing a meet. With it being his senior year in high school, I really want to be available for everything that he does. Just me! I got in touch with the co-host of Allume, Logan @lifefordessert, and chatted. Since I really don't blog on a regular basis, would Allume be something that I might want to attend? ( I am rolling with laughter at that comment now! Mercy!). Sweet Logan invited me over to her house--totally GORGEOUS by the way---and shared with me about Allume while we sat on the back deck watching her little one play.

I prayed and had such a peace about it, that I did register for this conference not really knowing what God's plans were for me by attending.

Fast forward 6 months to last weekend:

Since I lived in town, I volunteered to help with set up the day before Allume began. "Hello" to 50 new friends! Two of my Noonday collection "sisters" stayed with me here at the Hood Hilton (yes, I named my home that to get me motivated to discard the dust bunnies, clean the bedrooms, and paint the bathroom.) It's amazing at what a little motivation can do! My husband was thrilled!

The conference began on Thursday and lasted until Saturday night. Y'all, it was amazing! I met so many girls who love the Lord and write about their daily ups and downs and recipes and shopping and decorating all under one roof. The common thread was Jesus. Here I was thinking it would be just about blogging and technology and this and that and the other....nope. Blogging was mentioned, but Jesus was given the glory.

Friendships that had only been online became real. Meals were shared with new besties. Prayers were lifted throughout the days. Mission groups told their stories and shared videos of pain that had been overcome with hope. Songs of worship resonated in our hearts. On Friday night, Anthony Evans Jr. (son of pastor Tony Evans, brother to Priscilla Shirer, and former member of "The Voice")shared worship for 453 women. Y'all, "It is Well With My Soul" has never sounded more beautiful! I saw and heard a little glimpse of Heaven.

Authors shared their stories and their hearts. We received a gazillion books to take home with us! (Being the bookworm that I am....I was in a happy place!) Questions were posed and answers shared. Keynote speakers discussed what God has placed on their hearts in this season of their lives. One of my many take aways was from my online Bible Study teacher, September McCarthy. I have been doing a study on Luke for the past few weeks through Good Morning Girls--it was excellent! It was so neat to actually sit in a room with my "teacher" and hear her heart. September told us that we live on a mission. Whether it's your family, your friends, children you sponsor in another country, the homeless in your communities....we do our mission work on a daily basis, and we must be intentional about it. Can I get an "Amen?"

During the lunch on Saturday, I received a text from my husband letting me know how our son had done in his cross country meet. He ran the JV race and gave it 110%! He placed 10th overall in the county meet and had his fastest time this season. I missed it. I cried....but with joy! I had missed my son's last XC meet after his running for 5 years. But, God is good! This past week, it was announced that he would be running varsity based on the time that he had run at Saturday's meet. What a blessing! I am still watching him run as we head to the state meet next weekend.

Here are some iphone pictures from Allume to see just a smidgen of our time together. When you trust God to be over an event, it's going to be awesome!
Yes, it has been almost two months since my last post. But, I have a super delicious recipe for y'all to try. It's actually kinda healthy!! Dessert and healthy usually do NOT appear in the same sentence! Just sayin'.

I have been following a super sweet gal on her blog, and she is a foodie....I am not. We all know that! But, Kate has a love and desire to share her wonderful recipes. I first "met" Kate via a site for those of us who are going to the Allume conference for the first time. It's a wonderful conference for bloggers who love to write about encouraging others and who want to share how God is working in their lives. I am beyond excited as this event is happening in two weeks here in Greenville!! Looking forward to seeing what God reveals to me since I really have laid down blogging for the past few years. But, that's another post.

OK, back to the dessert. I decided that this carrot cake recipe sounded really good and not too difficult--my love language! My only issue was to locate the three kinds of flour that Kate has combined for a gluten free flour mix. And, no, we do not have to eat gluten free at our house. We can and do eat anything....which is not very healthy. But, I am working on that.

I read in Kate's recipe that you can find these first ingredients in most grocery stores. Well, she lives in Atlanta, and that is probably true for our neighbors down I-85. Here in G'ville, it's a different story. In the past two days, I went to 4 different stores looking for oat flour (Whole Foods), coconut flour (Whole Foods), and Tapioca Flour (wonderful Indian grocery store on Woodruff behind KFC for locals!!!). Once I got those ingredients, I was ready to go!

So, without further rambling, here are the pics to show you how my version of the carrot cake came to be.

Step one....locate the flour and measure correctly. (Please note that the counter is CLEAN at this point of photo shooting!)

One of my fav ingredients is cinnamon....while the cake was cooking, my house smelled lovely! And the counter is no longer clean.

Add grapeseed oil....yes, me neither!!! Something else new in the pantry!

You know this is the yucky part....all of the dirty dishes. See, all of the wonderful food blogs do not show what happens in real life after the mixing and measuring....I thought you might want to see what I was working with. Another reason that I am not an enthusiastic cook!

But, ohhhhh!!! Look at this right out of the oven. You can even see where I almost destroyed it by poking a gazillion holes in it to make sure it was done!

And the final result....pure heaven! Oh my word! So worth the trips to the stores. There's just a little bit of cream cheese frosting on top....just a bit. Please make sure to hop over to Kate's blog for the recipe and for her wisdom. I am beside myself that I will have the chance to meet her for lunch in a few weeks. Y'all enjoy and let me know your thoughts.

Sweet blessings,

May I translate? "Thank you to give us order. We're very appreciate that. When we have order, we have hope."

This is a photo of a thank you note from some of our Noonday collection artisans in Haiti. It was received in the main office and shared with us. Y'all, it's a thank you note to the customers who want to purchase their products. See those two cute NEW bracelets? Those are coming out on Aug. 28 in our catalog for the fall! These artisans are beyond thrilled that American women want their art...be it jewelry, scarves, belts or bags. Your orders give them hope!

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

God uses many ways to bring hope to His people. It can be through a smile to a stranger. Acknowledging a homeless person to help them remember that they too are important. Providing shelter and food to those suffering. Taking a new mom a meal. Listening to someone who is struggling and just needs a sounding board and a hug. Purchasing a piece of jewelry knowing that it helps provide the artisan with a living wage--not just a hand-out-- for a pretty trinket. Sometimes I think we are too busy to remember that God wants to use us to give hope and show love to others.

I am learning to slow down and abide in Him. That was the word that I have held close to my heart this year. I am learning to say "no" to good things; things that are not meant for me during this season. Learning to lean in and to really hear what His Word is speaking to my heart and how He wants me to follow. This is not easy for a gal who wants a plan now! I am in "wait" mode.

This sweet note truly touched my heart. It's such a simple reminder that our words and actions carry more weight than we realize. So, I encourage you to be that hope for your family, friends, and folks that may pass through your life for just a moment.

Hope y'all have a great weekend! It's the last one before school cranks up this year. Child #1 has already headed off to the land of Williams Brice and is counting down the days until the first SEC game. Hoping that he plans on studying as well! Child#2 begins his senior year in high school. Cross country conditioning has been going on for a while, and our first meet will be in a week up in Charlotte. What are your plans this weekend?

Sweet blessings,
Well, if you have been following me, you KNOW that I am that crazy mama! We have two weeks left until school begins here, and it's about time to finish....so I did! Then, come next month, I will start with fall mantel ideas :).

Here are some pics of the finished mantel with some cool pieces that I inherited, shopped my house for and bought--at the fabulous Real Deals here in Greenville! Lori and the girls will definitely help you if you have any decorating questions--I always do! I love the way it came together, and it gives a peaceful, cottagy (is that a real word?) feel for that dark portion of the den.
Just wanted to let you know that I am searching high and low to see what works best for the mantel during this summer season. After reading lots of blogs and looking a tons of beautiful pics, I see a reoccurring theme. There are girls out there in bloggyland that are very creative and CHANGE their mantel decor from season to season ( maybe even month to month like I used to with bulletin boards when I taught school! ). I am one of those that has kept the same fru-fru objects in the same place on the mantel from year to year. The only exception would be Christmas decorating. But we are in July (even though Hobby Lobby has their Christmas glitter out and ready to be sold! Have mercy!).

I digress....

So, my plan--note that it is ONLY a plan, please---is to change the mantel with the changing seasons. The season that we are experiencing at the moment is the rainy one...day after day after day! I don't want my mantel to reflect that at all.

I purchased these cute heritage collection Ball canning jars ( I do not can.) from Target after many of my Facebook peeps told me that I could find them there. And, they were so right. I cut fresh flowers from the yard, but I ran out of hydrangeas, so I clipped a few phlox to have a variety of colors. I pulled out my pieces of white milk glass ( still need to add to my collection). Then, I placed them on the mantel....

They are ALL the same height!!!!!!!!!!! Hardly any variation of height at all!!! I am not a symmetrical person--seriously. This bothers me.

So, with that being said, you have now seen Take#1. I have shopped my home, and there is not much left from which to choose. {sigh}

After some chit-chat on Facebook, my sweet friend Cathi told me that she has a collection of antique Ball jars that I can have!!! I am beyond thrilled! ( I get excited over old jars....what can I say?). They are different heights too. When we can mesh our schedules and get together, I will add her collection to my beginner one, and we shall have Take #2. Creating a summer mantel may take me until the fall to finish it! And then, I will need a fall idea. Be thinking for me! Y'all are awesome!

Sweet blessings,
As I jumped head over heels into the mantel and bookshelf project, I didn't think about how large or daunting a task it would be. I am so very thankful that Debbie at Painted Poppies was there encouraging me by texting and calling to check on the "elephant that I was trying to eat...". If you break it up in to small "bites," a project this big is very doable.

It took under three weeks to do simply because I was doing some traveling in between. Had I been home and "focused," I could have finished much sooner! But anyway.... it is DONE!!! So happy! And, I love it! Turning the dark wood into white magnolia and lightly distressing it opens up the entire room. Even the boys like it! They noticed without even being asked to tell me their thoughts.

Would I do this again? Ask me in a few months, and I will let you know! I will definitely do smaller projects--even have a few bouncing around in my head. I really do like the chalk paint (Maison Blanche) and its advantages (no sanding prior to painting, no primer prior to sanding, repeat those phrases!!). The paint and wax (how you seal it) do go a long way under normal circumstances--if you are working on small pieces.

So, here are the before, during and after pics of my "elephant"---
I got the stained glass window from our church chapel when the building was going through some remodeling. I wasn't sure what to do with it, but then I saw something similar on pinterest. I love the colors and the fact that there are broken pieces in the panes. Just as we are broken people and have to rely on God each day is my take on this window. It speaks to my heart.
Here is where I need your help! I am not sure what to put on either side of the mirror. At the moment, it will just stay like this. I have candles that I can place there, but I like to think outside the box...so if you have any cool ideas, please share them with me.
As of yesterday, a group of Compassion bloggers began their adventure in Nicaragua! I am so excited about this! After my trip with Compassion in January to Guatemala, I am more than ready to go back. I met our little girl, Iris and her mom. What a tremendous blessing it was to me. Maybe next time I go it will be....Uganda? Only the Lord knows and His timing is perfect. In the meantime, I wanted to share Edie's post with you all. She is one of the bloggers who is there, and I love what she has to say. Hope you enjoy!

Sweet blessings,
OK, since it looks like I actually might post more than one blog entry this month, I thought that I would go ahead and get started on my den redo. Before taking the plunge in the mantel make-over, I decided to go small and try my grandmama's side table first as I begin to play with sidewalk chalk paint--once a kindergarten teacher, always a teacher! No, it's actually chalk paint, and it's very cool!

Here is the before pic of grandmama's table. I spent many a Saturday morning helping her with chores--including dusting this piece. It's one of my favorites simply because it was hers! And, she let me go crazy with the Pledge! It would really shine!!
Below is after coat number one. I went ahead and did two thin coats because I just wasn't sure how it would look.

I used "Antique Blue" and love it! Two coats did the trick---and NO priming or sanding. Gotta love it!

I did decide to distress the wood a bit with a sanding block and just a bit of sandpaper. I won't distress the mantel as much when I tackle it. But this piece turned out fine. I was pleased.
The secret to the chalk paint is in the wax...the finishing touch. I used the clear wax as I wanted to keep the table a light color. I was amazed at how easy it was to use.
I learned quite a bit doing this piece. It really is not difficult, but seeing the daunting size of the mantel and the bookshelves, I might just do another trial piece (procrastinator that I am!).
Can you believe that May is over, and June is here? Mercy! I am not exactly sure when I started to sound like Mama and say that time flies as you get older....but I do sound like her! And, maybe that's a good thing.

Summer is just around the corner! So excited that this is the last week of school (although we have exams to study and stress over!!) for the kids in our district. Praise the Lord! I do have a few plans rolling around in my head for some summer projects. How about you all?

First on my list is to have a make-over. Not for me, even though I need one! No, I am thinking about the den. We have lived in this house for 7 years now, and I love it. I have also tried for 7 years to "heart" these dark wooden cabinets.

Notice the lovely brass pulls-- circa 1980's---they will be going along with the dark color! I am thinking some fun and sassy pulls (maybe Hobby Lobby style!).

When we moved here, we removed the front cabinets and painted the back wall yellow to brighten up this area. It helped a little bit...but not much.

We placed the mirror in front of the humongeous dark space to try and lighten it up a bit as well.

But y'all, it's still DARK!!

I just don't do dark. Sorry! I love bright, cheerful and clean color schemes. So, with that being said, I trucked on over to a fun store and spoke with some amazing and knowledgeable girls about

Yes, sirree....I am taking the plunge. I am not going with Annie Sloan--it's a great paint from what I have heard. I am using one called Maison Blanche paint. It has a wider variety of colors from which to choose----and I am all about the colors. And, the wax is supposed to go on like butter!

She made a trip to Atlanta to meet up with some of our ambassadors here in the south. Five of our ambassadors from SC were able to make the trip. And, we got to meet some of our fabulous ambassadors from Georgia! And, the icing on the cake was lunch at JCT's Kitchen--oh my word! That smoked brisket sandwich simply melted in my mouth!
We had a great time getting to know each other, eating, and talking about Noonday. What a difference it is making in the lives of our artisans and their families. Not all of us can be a part of a mission trip, but by purchasing handmade items to support those in 3rd world countries truly is something that we CAN do. I love being a part of this amazing team of women and those of you who make purchases to help our artisans receive a sustainable income. Take a moment and look at the beautiful items that we offer at Noonday Collection. Seeing God's hand in this ministry has been such a blessing.
Here are a few more pics of the gals from yesterday. Ladies, it was a pleasure to meet you all! You are beautiful inside and out.
And then....it just gets hot!!! So, I thought that I would go ahead and try to beat the heat by starting on my herb garden! This is sooo easy to do my friends (especially if I can do it!). This will be a dish garden---so that all these fun plants don't go crazy and take over my beds! I have it on the deck to make it quite easy to get to.

My big question for y'all is do you cook with herbs? I really want to research this and see how to spice up my cooking a bit instead of just always using salt and pepper. I went to a nearby nursery yesterday, and the owner was going on and on about an herb that I have never used--lemon thyme. Do any of you use it? Do you have a fabulous recipe to share? I would LOVE to hear what all you do with these.

First, find a fun bowl and a saucer....mine came from Old Time Pottery for $1.99!! I was so excited! Then use some good potting soil--not the cheap stuff!

I chose four different herbs for this size pot. I have rosemary, chives, cilantro, and lemon thyme.

I love the color of this one....just hope I'll like the taste of it too!

Then, I just start adding the plants. Squish them together and add the extra potting soil.

First Spring project for the season is done...actually two have been completed! For the past 7 years, as long as we have lived in this house, our front door has been red. I LOVE red! The color pops, and it makes giving directions to our home quite easy. We used to be the only house on the street with a red door. But, sun and time fade the lovely red to a dull something or other! Here are the "before" pictures.

Yes, it has been extremely sunny during my painting and picture taking time! The other week, I put some pics on Face Book with some paint swatches. Blue and green to be exact. I played with them and took them with me and asked advice of many wonderful friends who happen to be great decorators. Finally, I asked my sister. My sister truly could work for Southern Living. She has "the eye" for color, furniture and picture positioning, etc. You get the point! I did not receive those genes in my family lineage. Period. But, I love me some Pinterest and BHG magazine!

Baby sister suggested "black." Simply "black". How boring!! She said it makes for a clean slate, and I could add pops of color in my wreathes and flowers that had to be coordinated with the red color for years would suddenly change to any flowers I wanted to use. Guess she has a point. So, I headed down to my local Sherwin Williams and got a quart of black satin paint. Then, the fun began--not really! But, it had to be done.

Coat number one barely covered the red....mercy! It took three heavy coats, but, I think I will get used to it. Nothing like having a "clean slate!"

Yes, I know we need to replace our doorknob and handle. I am sure that they used to be a lovely brass. No more! That might be a fall project.

Ok, then once the paint had dried, the real fun began: popping color on a plain black door. A few weeks ago, I saw a cute burlap cross that I LOVED. You can see it here.

So I gathered my materials for what I thought would be an easy peasy project and take just a few minutes. Have mercy!!! Y'all, it was hard! Creating your own pattern, and cutting on burlap is not fun at all. I am pleased with the final outcome, but I will never attempt this again. Pinky promise!
He had decided a while back that his BIG day would be just family...the four of us doing something fun. Well, that FUN turned out to be a HUMONGOUS zip line nestled in the Smokey Mountains. Mercy! Y'all, I do NOT do heights at all! I simply have this feeling of getting to close to the edge of a mountain corner and leaning forward just a tad to0 far and oopsi! I am toast!

This adventure turned out to be quite better than toast! It was actually a blast! Hubby's parents have retired in a small community in Eastern Tenn., and we have driven past this zip line and whitewater rafting place for eons it seems! We finally checked it out on Saturday. What an amazing time we had! I truly encourage y'all to find them on the web and make a reservation as you go toodling (is that a real word or a Susanism??) through the NC mountains into Tenn. As soon as you cross the NC/TN state line, it's the very first exit. There are signs galore! If I weren't so lazy, I would try to find the name of it, but....not this morning! Sorry!

The trip is SUPPOSED to take 3.5 hours to traverse all 12 zip lines. People, we did it in WAAAYYYY under that time frame. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that we were the ONLY folks in line for that entire day to do this (Yes, our family had the honor of being the first folks for the 2013 season to zip!). The two guides were great and very knowledgeable ( I felt better as a mama letting my children ride over the Pigeon River!). We had short zip lines, long zip lines and double zip lines. We climbed steps to get to zip lines and were bounced around on bridges above the river. Just lots of fun! (Lots of prayers were lifted for trust and peace too!)

So, that being said, here are a few pics to share with y'all from our adventure. Let me know if you have any questions! I am now an expert at zip lining ( in my own little mind, that is!). Really, it is a great family adventure!

PS--The title of this post is simply part of a Zac Brown song that hubby sang over and over this weekend, and since it was all about his birthday, I titled it that way! Now, you know!

Sweet blessings,
Susan
Happy birthday, Hubby! We love you!Runner Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13117856929394961713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8164137788069754120.post-74222125412399477002012-09-06T06:57:00.000-07:002012-09-06T06:57:16.591-07:00From Guatemala with Love
Sweet friends! In the past few months, God has truly opened my eyes to see and hear what the "least of these" experience. Our family has prayed about what it is He wants us to do during this season. In addition to mission trips--local and foreign--He has shown us something that we can do which is such a small thing in my opinion. Let me explain.

As many of you know, we have two boys. Boys that are very athletic and very active and busy. The boys also have humongous appetites! Imagine that. The manager at both Costco and Publix love it when I come strolling in several times a week! We TRY to maintain a food budget at home, but it is amazing some weeks. Throw in eating out once a week....usually not even twice a week, and the budget has been destroyed. We love to see our boys eat....especially when it's something healthy :). So, whenever we go out as a family, the bill at the end of the meal is over the top! Seriously. Even chic-fil-a can have a huge dollar amount on the register. Can any of you all relate? I thought so.

A while back, we were given an opportunity to sponsor a child in another country. Basically, it meant that we would just not eat out one of those times when mama didn't feel like cooking. And, the amount that we would spend on our meal was usually more than what it costs to sponsor a child. Ya'll, it is only $38.00 a month....not even a meal out at your favorite restaurant...to sponsor a child! Most of you readers are able to do this. Unfortunately, in our busy lives, we don't think about this until later. I have done that many times over. After our first foreign mission trip last summer, I am trying to make a conscience effort to make a difference. Our family sponsors two children in two different countries. We have a little boy (8) in the Philippines and a little girl (9) in Guatemala. That's two meals that we don't eat out each month. Just two!

I encourage you to click on the link and read about these precious little ones that need your help! Compassion International has been around longer than I have been on this earth! (And, that's quite a few years!). It serves needy children through their local churches....churches that have known and served and loved these children and their families.

Just go here: http://www.compassion.com/sponsor_a_child/default.htm

I challenge you to sit down with a glass of iced tea or Coke or coffee and surf this page instead of catching up on Face Book or reading your email. Those will still be there in a while...promise! I have stepped out in faith to be a voice for these children by becoming a Compassion blogger (which means I truly need to blog on a regular basis again!) And, for another piece of exciting news, I am going to Guatemala in January with Compassion International to meet our little girl that we sponsor! I am beyond excited about this opportunity. I promise to keep y'all posted on this adventure! And, it will be one!!

So, will you come back by the blog and let me know that you did spend time on the sponsor website and that you and your family will prayerfully consider sponsoring a child? Please?? And, if God whispers to your heart to take this leap of faith, would you let me know? I will be praying for you.

Sweet blessings,
Just wanted to let you know that Noonday Collection is having an amazing summer sale....first of all! They have marked down some beautiful pieces that once we sell out, they are gone! They are also marking down some favorites that will be back in the fall, but are on sale just for you!!! You can visit the sale here!!

Coming up on September 4, we will be able to share with you our gorgeous fall line of new jewelry and accessories and "beyond amazing" scarves and purses!! I cannot wait! I will be ordering these new samples in the next few days!! And that means that I will be putting some of my beautiful and fun spring and summer samples on sale for you all. They will be reduced from 20-40%. I will take that money from the sale and put it right back into the business to purchase new samples. It all goes back to support those who are less fortunate by providing them a sustainable income as they try to work their way out of poverty. This is something that I pray about and dream about....no more poverty. I just thank you for your support in this wonderful business that God has placed on my heart during this season.

I CAN give you a Sneak Peek of some of the pictures that have been shared with us! I am loving the jewel tones this fall!
Another fun bag and look at all the bracelets!! Love this too.

So, in order for me to have these beautiful and fun pieces, I really do need to let go of some of my favs from this summer. I will try to have the sale up over the weekend. It will be cash and checks only. If you are local, then I can meet up with you and get your goodies to you. If not, there is a $6.00 fee for shipping and handling.

Hope you are as excited about the new items as I am. But, I am even more excited about helping a mama in India or Ethiopia or Peru be able to stay at home with her child and continue to create her art that we are falling in love with--which is her way out of poverty!

Sweet blessings,

Yes, sweet bloggy friends, I know that it's a hit or miss with my posts! That's just the way we are rolling during this season of life! But....I did want to share some fun pictures with you all today as our Peru Mission Team left a few hours ago. They are headed for the airport in Atlanta, then to the airport in Miami, then to the airport in Lima, Peru, and then to the airport in Cuzco, Peru! I am tired simply typing out all of these checkpoints!

During the next ten days, they will be traveling (of course!), rebuilding an orphanage in Urubamba (Not sure if that's the exact spelling, but it's how I sounded it out. Spell check didn't know either!), playing with the children that Scripture Union is serving, and sharing the love of Christ to the "least of these." After trips such as these, many times we find that those who we think we are going to serve, actually serve us instead! They have so little, and they are still filled with the joy that only comes from Christ. My prayer for them is Col. 3:23--"Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord, and not for man."

Thank you in advance for your prayers. Our entire family did this mission trip last year. This year, my oldest, will be representing our family. He is surrounded by precious ones from our church and nearby churches. Here are some pics that I took this morning as they packed up the bus and headed down I-85!
This week, I was thumbing through this month's "Southern Living" and a picture caught my eye. It was the floor of a porch on a house down in Louisiana. It was a lovely blue with portions of dark brown peeking through from distressing. Hmmm.....I have dark brown on the floor of my back porch. Pondering....

The floor is ugly and worn....but I love my back porch.

Yes, grace is there....a cute sign created and purchased from a homeless shelter in a downtown church.

But the dingy 20 plus year old paint remains....until the picture in the magazine reminds me that Lowes is just down the road a ways! So....a shopping I go! Love this shade of blue! It's called Woodlawn Blue Angel.
And so.....it begins! Since I do not like to tape off while painting--a lazy streak---I am very meticulous as I sweep the color on. And, another important factor that Hubby reminded me about is not to paint myself into a corner! He is so sweet :).
After two days and two coats of paint, I am done! All of the porch furniture is back in place. A sense of new and fresh replaces the old and dingy. I like it. Several of you all have shared about your upcoming projects on FB with me. Let me know when they are done and post those pictures!
It reminds me that if I am going to keep growing in my faith, I have to grow my roots deep in His Word. And, sometimes, it isn't easy!

During this season, I am praying about several opportunities that let me serve Him right here at home. They are mission based, but don't require immunizations or passports. So, I pray and I wait. I pray and wait some more. And, some more! I learn to listen....to Him through His Word, devotionals, songs, prayers, and folks that I know are walking along that path with God. I see. I hear. I get it! But, then I question myself! This is a hard thing that He is asking me to do in some ways. It requires complete trust and obedience. You know, some days I believe I can do it, and a few hours later, I am questioning again! Mercy! Do any of you all ever feel that way?

But then, I go to His Word and hear Him speak to that place in my heart--the place only He can fill:

35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’
37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,[a] you were doing it to me!’ Matthew 25: 35-40

I have heard this Scripture all of my life. It's not a new one that God gently led me to. But, I saw it with fresh eyes and a tender heart yesterday. That's how He speaks to me....when I am not really looking...He surprises me with a Word. I just love surprises!

Praying about growing my roots deeper, my friends.
Mama and Daddy used to tell me that constantly. Oh, I tried to sit and visit, but when I could see that the dishes needed to be unloaded from the dishwasher, or I needed to throw another load of laundry in the dryer, I would keep "visiting" but would begin to multi-task. My sweet hubby reminds me that when I multi-task, things don't always work out for the best--the way that I invision. I hate to admit it, and please don't tell him, but he is right! Shhh!

For the past few years, a darling girl that I grew up with (we're talking kindergarten all the way through high school) has been organizing a yearly get-together with the girls in our high school class. The last two years when I saw the date, I already had plans. This year, "darling girl that I grew up with" let me know 6 months in advance the date of our get together! In essence, put this on your calendar now and do not plan anything else! So, I did! Mercy!

The day came for the luncheon. I drove down to Columbia to ride with another friend to the restaurant. I have no sense of direction, so I figured it would be the smarter thing to do than to ride around the state of SC for an extra 45 minutes looking for this little town! On the way to Ridgeway, my other friend mentioned that we would have to wear hats....I'm thinking that my running hat is 100 miles back at home. Guess I won't wear a hat. And, found out that this restaurant was a tea room! Mercy! I have never done a tea room before! I'm a chick-fil-a gal through and through! I simply decided that I wouldn't worry about it! I just wouldn't wear a hat. Period.

Weeeelllll, when we got to the restaurant, 10 of my friends that I had not seen in FOREVER y'all...and I mean over 30 years for some of us....came up and suddenly, this huge lump formed in my throat! Mercy! Tears flowed as we hugged and loved on each other! It was so good to see the precious girls that I had grown up with. It was truly a blessing from above as we played dress up in big old floppy hats just as some of us had done years ago in the little red playhouse in my backyard. Time stood still for awhile.

We were served lunch, and it was simply delicious! We tried varieties of hot teas...and the girls at my table agreed that we liked our plain 'ol sweet iced tea the best! We caught up on children, grandchildren ( I still cannot get over the fact that some of my sweet young girlfriends are young grandmothers!!), husbands, and others who couldn't be there. It was truly a sweet time. When we had to leave, it was so hard. More hugs and kisses and " I love you's" went around the group. Y'all, time does not stand still. I believe that it gets a little faster each day. Make each day count. Don 't wait until tomorrow. Make that phone call or write that note (snail mail is still wonderful!). Make plans to sit and visit for awhile with your friends. It's so worth every sweet moment.

Wanted to share a few of the pictures that I took--and that my friend Teri took too! Hope you enjoy!
After a great women's conference, I headed over to Franklin to visit with friends that I hadn't seen in years. Kim and I spent time laughing, taking pictures (of course!), eating and shopping. It was so much fun!

Makes me realize how strong and mighty our God truly is. I trust Him with the big ticket items....but how about the small, everyday things? Something I have done forever is learning. I know what good study habits look like and apply them when learning new information. I try to convey this to my kids as well!! Sometimes, I am successful!

This year, rather than making New Year's Resolutions, I have decided to try to memorize Scripture. Some amazing ladies have really encouraged me--y'all know who you are! Seems like this should be a relatively easy task, right? Wrong-o! It's not a strength of mine. A beautiful woman in my Bible study whose heart is so big for God, encouraged myself and others to ask the Holy Spirit to teach us. So, I think I am going to take her advice and pray about this small item....but it's huge to me! To hide His Word in my heart, to be able to share it with others without fumbling through the concordance, to share what He has taught me....wow! There truly is "...nothing my God cannot do!"

I don't believe that much of anything around housework was started much less completed! I had deadlines, meetings, appointments, etc.--all good stuff! Then, I left before the crack of dawn on Saturday morning for a half- marathon (13.1 miles) in Columbia. It was a beautiful but windy day all over the south! The gun sounded and away we went. The first seven miles were amazing! I was running faster than I needed to be, but that was ok--I knew that there were hills and lots of them coming up around the corner. Hills are not friends to most runners! And, Child #1 was going to meet me with a few miles left and run me in over the hardest part of the course--if he remembered to set his alarm and roll out of bed! The race course finished a few feet away from his dorm at USC.

Several hours further south in Savannah, Ga., many of my friends were toeing the line for a marathon (26.2 miles). One of my closest friends and running partner, Phebe, was there as well. She was going to be running with a dear friend of ours, Tom, from church. Phebe's husband and Tom's wife were going to meet them at mile 25 and run with them to the finish.

My race finished up, and we had gone to grab a sandwich and tea for lunch. While my friend, Ginnie, and I were eating, my cell phone rang. I saw that it was Phebe. I knew that she had finished the marathon and would give me all of the details. But, these were details that I never expected to hear.....ever. It's really hard to even type this a few days later. Phebe was sobbing when I answered the phone. Trying to process what she was saying, I heard "Tom," "collapsed" and "not good." Tom had been running with her and pacing her throughout the race. Tom is a faster runner than both of us. He was not struggling with the pace. He had prepared for this race. He is a great athlete--runner and cyclist. Tom is 58 years old and in amazing shape. At mile 23, he stopped to adjust his knee brace, and Phebe kept going. She turned to see if he was coming and watched him collapse to the ground. She rushed to him shouting for help....paramedics were 50 feet away. A nurse running the course stopped and stayed with her and prayed with her. They took Tom to the hospital in one ambulance, and Phebe rode in another. She called Tom's wife and told her that Tom had collapsed and was on the way to the hospital.

Deep prayer filled our table at lunch miles away. I called my husband and our minister. I texted a friend who was at the race in Savannah waiting on her husband to finish. She was able to go to the hospital to be with them. Then, the phone call came from Phebe. Tom didn't make it. While running the longest physical race he had ever run, he completed the spiritual race of life. He literally ran into the arms of Jesus. Jesus was waiting for him at the finish line.

Y'all, we are all still in shock. All of our community. We know that God is good and has a plan and a purpose for us all. He also has a kingdom calendar. Tom has a new birthday on it now....November 5, 2011. Enjoy every minute that God has given you here with your family and friends. We are not promised that all of our time here will be easy....we live in a fallen world. But, we have hope in Christ! I would simply ask that you cover Cindy, Tom's wife and my sweet friend, and her family in your prayers. Also, please, please keep Phebe in prayer as well.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on the day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing." 2Timothy 4:7-8
Sweet blessings,
SusanRunner Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13117856929394961713noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8164137788069754120.post-7233524091547359112011-10-25T18:42:00.000-07:002011-10-25T18:42:11.652-07:00De-cluttering My HeartI went to the hall closet the other day to search for wrapping paper. When I opened the door, several items came tumbling down....a single glove--no mate in sight, a winter hat from Peru, tissue paper for gift bags, etc. You get the picture! I had to pull out the vacuum cleaner and look into the deep dark depths for my cute polka dot paper. It wasn't there!

How many times have you been on the hunt for something, and due to your lack of not putting things where they belong, could not find the item needed? Any hands out there?? Mine shot up before I even finished typing that sentence! Mercy!

All of this to say that our hearts can become cluttered just like our closets, our mini vans, our garages. Today in our Bible study, our teacher shared some insights as to this matter. We are studying With All Your Heart by Brenda Blankenship which is based on The Beatitudes and the Fruit of the Spirit. It's an amazing study that ties these together. I want to highlight a few points from today and get your opinions.

Our hearts can become cluttered just like out closets. If they stay too cluttered, we tend to forget the sight and sound and fragrance of Jesus. We're too busy to spend time with Him. There's no room in our hearts for His presence.

We must learn to make Jesus the center of our attention, the focal point of all we do, the object of our concentration if we want to maintain a healthy heart.

I don't know about you, but I need, I desire a healthy heart! "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God." Matthew 5:8. If my heart is not pure, de-cluttered, not focused, then I have a big problem! I will not see God! I want to see Him everyday! I need Him every minute of everyday whether I realize it or not. Do you remember that beautiful hymn, "Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus?" It's one of my favorites! It is a great reminder of focusing on Him--on His goodness and righteousness. He is the ONLY one who can clear our cluttered hearts.

Running to Him now for some de-cluttering!
